Friday, January 21 8:00-12:00 Today I am so grateful for Marcia and all her knowledge she is sharing on Wiki. I have learned that Wiki is a collaborative site where we can document learning and interact with students and teachers. I have learned that this could be a great tool to communicate with students about their reading over the summer. Also, I am thinking that I could use Wiki with some 5th grade students to answer a nightly comprehension question on their independent reading homework! I have created a 5th grade Wiki page and will attempt to have students access and answer a question this week!
I also learned how to access the new district website. I updated and activated my profile. I learned to navigate the new school website and what fusion pages are and what they can be used for. Next step will be to explore fusion pages and how they can be used to communicate with parents.

Today we reviewed our wiki pages. We looked at ways that other schools have used wiki in their classrooms under the resources section. We took a better look at all the resources that are offered on the wiki spaces site. We learned how to add student names and upload them onto our wiki site without providing a student email address. We were also given time to practice on the wiki and become more comfortable with using the wiki!

Today we worked on our fusion pages from the school website. I was able to se up my fusion page. I added my schedule and files for each grade level as well as my contact information. I also included a couple of links for parents that maybe helpful for practice at home. I also learned how to attach pictures and sound. Along with the fusion page, I also reviewed my profile page, added a picture, and edited my profile.

Today Molly presented a workshop on the SMART board. It was very informative and I learned a lot about the smart board's capabilites. I have little to no experience with a smart board so this session was very helpful. I learned how to navigate and troubleshoot the smart board. Molly also introduced us to the smart board exchange website. There were a number of examples of ways the smart board can be used to enhance learning in all subjects. We explored a jeopardy game and letter tiles to practice nonsense words. I thought this would be a great way to mix up the practice for students when practicing nonsense words or a specific short vowel sound in my room. I have emailed Jesse to see if he can install the smart board software onto my desktop so that I can use this feature as well as some other features of the smart board in my classroom even though I do not have a smart board. I didn't realize all the things that a smart board could do. We also explored handwriting paper as well as how to record your work. this makes the smart board a center or independent work station. I would love to continue to learn more about the smart board and would like to gain some experience with them. Another way that I thought a smart board could be used is to put up a projectable book from Reading A-Z and could do warm up fluency activities daily with many groups.

Today Mary Ellen from Capstone digital presented the information on MyOn reading program. It is a great program that has access to numerous books. It is nice that the books can either be read to them or they can read the book themselves. I also like that the book has a comprehension quiz along with it. I think this program will be a great resource for fluency groups or independent reading during progress monitoring. This would then become a weekly tool for some students. I also think this would be a great program for a summer reading program. It is nice that the students can access the books at home and then they can complete the reading at home. This is an option to use from some students for over the summer reading.
We also had time to update Wiki and complete our forms for the PDP. Marcia also shared some knowledge of www.storybird.com. This was such a neat possibility for students in writing. They can write a story and then add a picture. It is minimal cost to print it or for a big cost you can publish it. This could become a great tool for motivating students to bring up progress monitoring or for working very hard. We also looked at wordle and text effects in word. There are so many opportunities and possibilites to use technology to teach. This was a very informational day that gave me ideas to use in my teaching.
